Diamondbacks, Brewers, Padres don't sign first-round picks

Baseball Betting Lines

08/17/2010 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres all failed to sign first-round draft picks prior to a midnight deadline on Monday.

The decisions mean the teams will receive compensatory selections for next year.

Barret Loux, a right-handed pitcher from Texas A&M, was the sixth overall pick by Arizona. He reportedly failed a physical and the Diamondbacks chose to take a compensatory selection, which will be the seventh pick next year.

The Padres failed to sign right-handed pitcher Karsten Whitston, who was the ninth overall pick in June's draft. He is set to attend the University of Florida.

Dylan Covey, the 14th overall pick, didn't sign with the Brewers, mostly due to his recent diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. Also a right-handed pitcher, Covey is set to attend the University of San Diego.
