08/08/2010 - Akron, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Hunter Mahan fired a six-under 64 on Sunday to come from three shots back and win the Bridgestone Invitational.
Mahan finished at 12-under 268 for his third career PGA Tour win and second of the season. It was his first victory at one of the lucrative World Golf Championships events.
Ryan Palmer shot a 69 and took second place, two strokes behind Mahan at 10- under 270.
Retief Goosen (65) and Bo Van Pelt (67) tied for third place at nine-under 271.
Tiger Woods set several dubious personal records in his worst tournament as a professional, yet still managed to hold onto the No. 1 world ranking.
After closing with a 77 -- his poorest final-round score on the PGA Tour since turning pro -- Woods tied for 78th place in a field of 80 players, his worst finish as a professional.
He ended at 18-over 298, his highest score in relation to par since shedding his amateur status in 1996.
"It doesn't surprise me at all," Woods said. "It's been a long year."
Woods managed to dodge one bullet. He will still be the No. 1 player in the world rankings after Phil Mickelson labored to an eight-over 78 on Sunday, his worst round in competition this year.
All Mickelson needed to do was finish fourth or better after entering the final round tied for 10th place and he would have held the top spot for the first time in his career.
Instead, the world No. 2 shot a 41 on the front nine, didn't make a birdie until the 17th hole and dropped into a share of 46th place at three-over 283.
In an interview with CBS after the round, Mickelson said the world ranking stuff will "happen over time" and that he believes he'll be No. 1 some day.
"It's hard to be upbeat after a round like today," Mickelson said. "I'll probably spend some time tonight licking wounds."
Mahan saved par after hitting into a flower bed behind the green at the 667- yard 16th, one of five consecutive pars he made at the end of his round to protect the two-shot lead he took with a birdie at the 13th.
He also won the Phoenix Open in February.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.
Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.
Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.
A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.
Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.
Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
