08/31/2010 - Miami, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chad Tracy's game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning produced the only run of the game, as the Florida Marlins edged the Washington Nationals in the middle installment of a three- game series.
Annibal Sanchez started on the mound for Florida and pitched seven strong innings while Clay Hensley (3-4), who was on the hill for the top of the 10th, earned the win.
Florida snapped its three-game skid.
Washington twirler Jordan Zimmerman, in his second start since a lengthy absence after Tommy John surgery, tossed six scoreless innings and allowed just one hit with nine strikeouts. The Nationals saw their three-game win streak halted.
After a close play at the plate in the top of the 10th, it was another close play at home which led to the Marlins to victory. With Washington reliever Drew Storen (3-3) on the mound, Hanley Ramirez hit a one-out single and stole second base. Gaby Sanchez then walked before Tracy lined a shot to left field. Ramirez rounded third and used a timely slide to barely beat the throw to the plate.
Both teams had a scoring opportunity in the second inning.
In the top of the frame, Adam Dunn walked with one out and Mike Morse singled, but Ivan Rodriguez struck out and Nyjer Morgan grounded out. Florida's portion of the second saw Sanchez lead off with a double to right field, but he was erased on a double play before Mike Stanton grounded out.
Dunn ripped a single with one out in the top of the seventh, but Morse fanned and Rodriguez lined out.
In the top of the 10th, a close play at the plate nearly produced the game's first run. With Morgan on second base and one out, Adam Kennedy grounded out to second base and Morgan tried to score on the play. The throw to the plate was high, and instead of attempting a low slide, which would have easily beat the throw, Morgan barreled over Florida catcher Brett Hayes, who held on to the ball for the final out despite remaining on the ground in obvious pain from the massive collision.
Game Notes
